SCALP MICROPIGMENTATION (SMP) FAQS

Does having SMP hurt?

Eveyone's experience and threshold is different, whilst many find it pretty painless, it is common to experience some slight discomfort in some areas more than others

How long does it last?

Typically it can last a few years, however, some clients  retain pigment better than others and the same with certain pigment shades. Therefore it is recommended you get 12-18 month top ups to keep the colour looking its best and fresh

Is it a Tattoo?

Yes - it is still a form of micropigmentation, cosmetic tattooing etc. Any pigment or ink implanted into the skin is a form of tattooing. We work with specialised pigments that are different to conventional tattoo inks, but none the less, they are still being deposited into the skin with a needle.

What happens after the procedure?

After the procedure you may notice some slight redness, even a little swelling, this is normal and will subside usually over the course of a few hours. The colour will look darker and more intense initially due to the increased blood flow  and redness in the area.

What will my treatment look like during the healing period?

It will go through a healing journey, something like this as a guide:

Immediately after - tattooed area will seem darker and more intense as mentioned, possibly a little red and sore and swollen.

The next few days as it begins to heal, it will feel a little tight, darker in colour still but the redness and swelling will begin to settle.

Typically around days 7 to 10 you will be noticing  your tattoo will start to appear lighter - don't panic, it is normal and what we ideally want to see.

Does it look natural?

SMP can look unbelievably naturally, whilst we are creating 2d flat microdots to replicate the hair follicle, it still leaves amazing results that will seriously leave people often none the wiser!

AFTERCARE ADVICE

  • Do not touch the area treated immediately after, especially with unwashed hands

  • Follow the cleaning guidelines for the treatment provided to you by The Loft Aesthetics We advise 'NO WET, NO SWEAT' for SMP procedures so you are advised to avoid excessive sweating and exercise for 5 to 7 days after the treatment

  • Avoid swimming for 10 to 14 days, as well as Jacuzzis and Hot Tubs and Sunbeds.

  • Do not pick or scratch the treated area - as the area heals, it is likely you will get some flaking, as tempting as it is, do not pick this, you could risk scarring and removing pigment

  • Ensure you sleep on a clean pillowcase post treatment

  • Avoid skin products that are acid based i.e. Glycolic and Retin based on your treated area both long term and immediately after. Also avoid exfoliants and enzymes on the area

  • Should any irritation or reaction occur you should seek medical advise immediately

  • Avoid Botox and Fillers on  or near treated areas for 4 to 6 weeks

  • Increase your fluid intake to help support your Lymphatic system and its important role in your healing

  • Colour typically will fade once healed. Healing takes 4 weeks for the skin to fully settle and replenish, therefore it is this long until you see the final healed results. During this period they will be initially dark, then possibly dry & flakey, then lighter around week 2 on wards - PLEASE BE PATIENT, SMP is a process

  • Typically 3 sessions are required to perfect the treatment, so after the first session, the treatment is not finished, SMP is a process and an art that should not be rushed

  • Please be patient and look after your treatment to ensure optimum results as whilst everyone heals differently, following these guidelines and any others given to you by The Loft Aesthetics will only help with your final results
